Nisei Veterans Memorial Center to present “Voices Behind Barbed Wire” on Sept. 12

The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center (NVMC) will host a special community screening of “Voices Behind Barbed Wire” on Saturday, Sept. 12, at its campus located at 665 Kahului Beach Road. The program is free to attend, and reservations are required.

The documentary explores the experiences of Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II, illuminating personal stories of resilience, identity, and civil liberties. Following the film, NVMC will present a panel discussion featuring Carole Hayashino and Ryan Kawamoto, who will offer historical context, reflections on community memory, and insights into ongoing preservation efforts.

This event is supported by Pacific Historic Parks and the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi, and presented in partnership with Honouliuli National Historic Site, Kinetic Productions, and the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center.

Throughout the month of September, and in partnership with the Wailuku Public Library, a pop‑up exhibit on Honouliuli will be available for public viewing, offering additional opportunities to learn about Hawaiʻi’s incarceration history.
