Nine teams compete in inaugural Steve Colflesh Classic Girls Volleyball Tournament at Seabury Hall

Seabury Hall welcomed nine girls volleyball teams from Maui, Oʻahu, and California to its Erdman Athletic Center for the inaugural Steve Colflesh Classic Girls Volleyball Preseason Tournament, held Aug. 13-14.

The tournament brought together Baldwin High School, Chatsworth Charter High School, Hanalani Schools, King Kekaulike High School, Maryknoll High School, Mililani High School, Le Jardin Academy, Seabury Hall, and University of San Francisco High School for two days of preseason competition. The tournament was originally scheduled to conclude on Saturday, Aug. 15, but organizers moved the final day of play to Friday, Aug. 14, because of Hurricane Lala.

University of San Francisco High School captured the inaugural tournament championship, with Maryknoll High School finishing as runner-up.

The Steve Colflesh Classic was created to honor longtime Seabury Hall Athletic Director, coach, and mentor Steve Colflesh, whose leadership helped shape the school’s athletic program for more than 30 years. Throughout his career, Colflesh emphasized that athletics’ value extends well beyond wins and championships, focusing on the lessons learned, relationships built, and memories created through competition.

“This tournament was an incredible experience, with nine teams from Oʻahu, Maui, and California competing at a high level,” said Seabury Hall Head Girls Volleyball Coach Lecca Roberts. “It was exciting to see so many girls competing so hard in a preseason tournament, and we’re looking forward to growing it in the future.”

Roberts, who was coached by Colflesh during her time as a Seabury Hall student-athlete, said honoring her former coach made the tournament especially meaningful.

“Honoring Coach Steve Colflesh made the weekend even more special,” Roberts said. “He coached both Yaya and me, so having him back in the gym and celebrating the legacy he has had on generations of athletes was really meaningful.”

Seabury Hall Athletic Director Yacine “Yaya” Meyer also played for Colflesh as a student-athlete and now leads the athletic program he helped build.

“Seabury Hall is so grateful to have the opportunity to host this amazing tournament,” Meyer said. “Bringing this caliber of competition and play to our Maui community was exciting and fun to watch. Having the opportunity to honor Coach Colflesh and recognize the lasting impact he has made on our Seabury Hall community as a longtime Athletic Director was truly memorable.”

“His dedication to our students, student-athletes, and athletics program has left a lasting legacy,” Meyer added. “We are so grateful that he continues to be an active and valued member of our community.”

The Steve Colflesh Classic was designed not only to provide high-level preseason competition, but also to create opportunities for student-athletes, coaches, and families to build friendships and lasting memories. Seabury Hall looks forward to growing the tournament in future years and continuing to celebrate the values Colflesh brought to generations of Spartan student-athletes.
