Hawaiian Electric conducting pole staking and site inspections in Lahaina as part of wildfire safety plans

As part of its ongoing wildfire safety strategy to harden the transmission lines serving West Maui, Hawaiian Electric contractors will conduct utility pole surveys in Lahaina from Sept. 28 through Oct. 7, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The surveys are part of Hawaiian Electric’s grid hardening efforts to improve resiliency and reduce wildfire risk. Crews will survey approximately 40 utility poles along distribution lines in areas above the Lahaina Bypass. As part of this work, temporary wooden stakes or markers may be placed near existing electrical infrastructure. 

The work will be done by Dudek, a contractor hired by Hawaiian Electric. Dudek crews generally consist of three personnel and their equipment. Dudek will drive in contractor-marked vehicles and will carry contractor identification badges.

The inspections are performed at the poles and power lines, and no one will request to enter a home or business. There may be instances where the operator must enter private property, like a yard, to access a utility pole. In these instances, the operator will make their presence known before accessing equipment located on private property. Electric service will not be impacted.
