County to open emergency shelters Friday on Maui, Molokaʻi for Tropical Storm Nolo impacts

The County of Maui will open emergency shelters at noon on Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, for anyone impacted by Tropical Storm Nolo. The National Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Maui County at 11:19 a.m. today, with tropical storm-force winds possible within the next 48 hours. Maui County remains under a Flood Watch, which was issued at noon Sept. 23.

Emergency shelters are located at:

• WEST MAUI: Lahaina Civic Center Gym, 1840 Honoapiʻilani Highway, Lahaina 
• SOUTH MAUI: South Maui Community Park Gymnasium, 1501 Liloa Drive, Kīhei
• UPCOUNTRY: Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center, 91 Pukalani St., Pukalani
• HĀNA: Hāna High & Elementary School, 4111 Hāna Highway
• MOLOKAʻI: Kilohana Recreation Center, 344 Kamehameha V Highway, Kaunakakai

Emergency Shelters provide a safe gathering place from the elements and are equipped with charging stations for personal electronic devices. Residents should bring their own bedding, food, drinking water, medications, charging cables and other essential items. Pets are allowed if they are in crates. The duration and amenities of the shelters will depend on the severity of weather conditions. Additional sites will open if further needs arise, according to the Maui Emergency Management Agency.

When shelters open on Maui, same-day reservations will be allowed for eligible paratransit riders to reach a shelter. This service will be available Friday only. For more information, call Maui Economic Opportunity Transportation at 808-877-7651.
