HECO restores power to West Maui customers; PSPS watch ends

(Update: 1:30 p.m., Sept. 28, 2026) Hawaiian Electric has ended its Public Safety Power Shutoff watch since weather conditions have improved, reducing wildfire risk. As of 1:30 p.m., all major power outages caused by storm damage have also now been restored.

For public safety, the company initiated its PSPS program and shut off power for a few hours on Sunday in Pukalani, due to low humidity and high winds. Those customers had electricity restored yesterday at 4:30 p.m. No safety incidents were reported.

At 11:30 a.m. today, power restoration began for West Maui customers. Service is restored in phases rather than all at once to ensure the system can be safely returned to operation. Crews have since restored service to nearly all 10,000 customers in West Maui after completing inspections and repairs to the transmission line serving the area.

Restoration efforts were hampered by high winds in excess of 60 mph near the ridge area above Pāpalaua Wayside Park which prevented helicopter inspections and repairs. This outage was not a PSPS.

Customers are encouraged to remain alert for potential utility imposters, especially after recent storms. Hawaiian Electric employees and contractors are required to carry and display identification badges. If identification cannot be provided, customers should verify the person’s affiliation by reporting it online or by calling one the company’s Customer Call Centers:

Hawaiian Electric has started the process of restoring power to West Maui customers at 11:30 a.m. Company representatives note that this is done in phases. The public can track progress on the company map here: Maui County Outage Map | Hawaiian Electric.

At 12:45 p.m., the map showed an estimated 1,405 were still without power in West Maui. At 1 p.m., the outage map showed that most customers had power restored.

About 10,000 customers were without power in West Maui overnight. These outages were not due to a Public Safety Power Shutoff. Crews were sent to conduct damage assessments at transmission lines at a ridge above Pāpalaua Wayside Park at first light this morning, as they awaited approval of aerial flights in the area.
