Police identify victim of single-vehicle crash reported Sept. 23 in Lahaina

Maui police released the identity of the man killed in a single-vehicle crash reported last week in Lahaina. Manuel Olivas, 18, of Lahaina suffered fatal injuries in the Honoapiʻilani Highway crash reported at around 1:33 a.m. on Sept. 23, 2026, near the intersection with Kāʻanapali Parkway.

A preliminary investigation reveals that a white 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on Honoapiʻilani Highway in the inner lane at high speed when the operator lost control. The Silverado then went off the roadway, down an embankment, and collided into a tree on the driver-side of the vehicle.

As a result of this collision, the operator was pronounced deceased at the scene. An investigation reveals that the operator was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

Police say speed is considered a factor in the crash.  The involvement of drugs or alcohol has not yet been determined, as the investigation is ongoing.

This was Maui County’s ninth traffic fatality of 2026, compared to 12 at the same time last year.

The Maui Police Department extended condolences to Olivas’ family and friends.
