No tsunami threat expected from 7.6 earthquake near Panama

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports a 7.6-magnitude earthquake near Panama poses no tsunami threat for Hawaiʻi.

The earthquake struck at 12:56 p.m. local time near Pitaloza Arriba, Panama, according to the US Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center. Extensive shaking impacts are probable, and a disaster is likely, the center reported.

Approximately 4.6 million people experienced moderate to severe earthquake impacts, it said. Aftershocks, some potentially strong, may follow.
