PHOTOS: Honolua Surfers Make Best of Small Sets

Maui surfers know that the best surf during the winter season usually lies at the island’s north shore surf spots like Hookipa Beach and Peahi (Jaws).

When the wind blows in too strong in the north, however, some surfers opt-out on  bigger, messier waves for smaller, better formed waves at West Maui surf spot Honolua Bay.

On Sunday morning, waves on the North Shore were large but choppy, gradually dying down throughout the day.

Waves at Honolua Bay were much smaller (no more than 5 ft.high), but  wind was significantly less of an hassle at 10 mph offshore, versus the North Shore’s 25 mph sporadic gusts.

A large northwest swell for Maui’s north shore is building up throughout the night that may  bring waves up to 25 ft., putting some brave North Shore surfers back in business at locations like Peahi.

Surf will peak tonight on the North Shore and gradually decline until the High Surf Warning is lifted at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31.
