Central Maui Rep. Tyson Miyake will remain a majority whip in the Hawaiʻi House of Representatives under the leadership team House Speaker Nadine Nakamura announced Friday for the 34th Legislature.

Miyake, a Democrat, is one of three majority whips named to the team. The others are Reps. Lisa Kitagawa and Tina Nakada Grandinetti, according to a news release from the House.

Nakamura will continue as speaker. Rep. Linda Ichiyama will serve as vice speaker, Rep. Sean Quinlan as majority leader, Rep. Kirstin Kahaloa as majority caucus leader and Rep. Dee Morikawa as majority floor leader. Rep. Sue Keohokapu-Lee Loy will serve as assistant majority floor leader.

“Our leadership team reflects the diversity of our Majority Caucus, bringing together working families, unique perspectives, and voices from across the islands to ensure we represent the needs of communities throughout Hawaiʻi,” Nakamura said. “We look forward to building on our work and continuing to address the needs of Hawaiʻi’s families, including tackling the high cost of living, expanding access to affordable housing, and protecting our ʻāina.”

Nakamura became the first woman to serve as speaker of the Hawaiʻi House on Nov. 6, 2024, the release said. It also described her as the first Asian American woman to hold a state House speaker post in the United States.

The Legislature will convene its 2027 regular session Jan. 20.
