Safe Routes to School Workshops in Wailuku and Kihei

An international expert in walkability, bikeability, and traffic calming strategies comes to Maui for workshops focusing on safe routes to schools.

The workshops, presented by Dan Burden, will be held on two consecutive Thursdays at the following times and locations:

• Wailuku: 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, February 9, at the reWailuku site, 1980 Main Street, Wailuku Town.
• Kihei: 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, February 16, at Kamali`i Elementary School.

Burden is the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals.  During the upcoming workshops, Burden will provide a roadmap to the federally mandated Safe Routes to School program.

The Safe Routes to School program promotes community design incorporating pedestrian and bike ways.  The intent is to enhance safe travel and exercise for students in respective communities.

The National Center for Safe Routes to School website lists four key factors of successful Safe Routes to School programs including: (1) Identifying an in-school leader to champion the program; (2) holding activities that reinforce walking and bicycling; (3) seeking parent support; (4) and setting policies, such as early dismissal for students who walk or bicycle home from school.
