3 People Rescued From Rip Current at Napili Bay
By Wendy Osher
Three Canadian visitors were rescued from West Maui waters yesterday when they became caught in a rip current at Napili Bay.
The incident was reported at 10:34 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, about 60 to 70 yards offshore.
The incident began when a 56-year-old man became caught in the rip current while swimming off shore, according to fire officials.
Upon seeing the man in distress, a 38-year-old man and his 10-year-old daughter went out on boogie boards in an attempt to rescue the elder male. In doing so, the father and daughter became caught in the current as well.
Although all involved were from Canada, the elder male was not related to the two individuals who came to his rescue.
The Maui Fire Department’s Engine 11 and Jet Ski 3, responded, arriving on scene at 10:41 a.m.
All three individuals were on shore by 11 a.m., with no injuries reported.
