County authorities have released further details from this morning’s fatal shooting in south Maui saying, “A Maui police officer shot a male suspect in Kihei after he allegedly pulled a handgun on the officer this morning.”
Maui police have since identified the victim as 31 year old Marshall M.K. Langford of Wailuku.
County officials have confirmed that a second suspect also involved in the stolen car incident has since turned himself in to Maui police.
County Communications Assistant Director, Ryan Piros said police received a report of a stolen vehicle parked at the Mana Kai Maui Resort. “When officers arrived on scene at 11:20 a.m., they found the suspect in the vehicle,” said Piros.
“Police said the suspect attempted to flee the scene, and while doing so, allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the officers. The officer responded by firing his weapon at the suspect who sustained fatal injuries,” said Piros in a statement.
Medics responded to the report at 11:21 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at the 2960 South Kihei Road incident.
When crews arrived at 11:28 a.m., they found an unresponsive male, possibly in his early 30s, according to Maui County Paramedics Association spokesman Ryan Joslin.
Medics administered care on scene, but pronounced the man dead after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, according to Joslin.
The police officer involved in the shooting is an 18-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, assigned to Kihei Patrol, according to authorities. County officials say he is on administrative leave pending an investigation as part of standard procedure by MPD.
Witness tell us the incident was a police involved shooting in which the victim and another individual were being sought by police. The incident, witnesses say, involved a vehicle chase.
The area was cordoned off with yellow police tape while police conducted their investigation.
