57th Annual Makawao Rodeo Runs Through Sunday

The 57th Annual Makawao Rodeo got underway Thursday and runs through Sunday at Oskie Rice Rodeo Arena. The event is run by the Maui Roping Club and Auxiliary.

More than 350 paniolos are expected to compete in this Hawaiian style rodeo at Kaonoulu Ranch, located about a mile above Makawao town on Olinda Road. Bull-riding, team-roping, calf-roping, bronc riding, mugging, barrel racing, and break-away are among the events. Qualifying rounds started Thursday and continue on Friday with the popular Bull Bash on tap under the lights at 7 p.m.

The “47th Annual Makawao Paniolo Parade” will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, complete with rodeo royalty, beauty queens, foliage draped pa’u riders, classic cars, and music and floats competing for coveted trophies. This year’s theme is “E Ho’omau Na Paniolo” — Perpetuate the Paniolo Lifestyle.
There will be NO PARKING in town during the parade on Saturday. There will be a free shuttle to the parade from 7 to 9 a.m., and back to the rodeo grounds beginning at 11:30 a.m. Public restrooms will be available at Eddie Tam Center, there will also be porta potties at parking lot of Komoda’s Store.

Thursday’s Slack featured 34 contestants in the Wahine Barrel Racing, 16 in Junior Barrel Racing and 26 in Wahine Breakaway and 28 in Wahine Steer Undecorating. Below are the results of the top three places in the 1st go:

– The event is broadcast live on the Island 107.5FM with Karen Mawae-Spence (14th year).

– Spectators coming through rodeo grounds parking area will receive a flyer with local coupons from participating sponsors and a chance to win a trip for two to Las Vegas with Vacations Hawaii. On every flyer is a raffle number. The number has to be submitted to the Island 107.5 FM broadcasting booth in order to be entered.
