Maui to get $800,000 for Bus Shelters

Maui will receive $800,000 in federal funds to build new bus shelters and install solar powered lighting, bike racks, and recycle containers.

In announcing the funding yesterday, Senator Daniel Inouye noted that Maui’s bus system is one of the fastest growing public transit systems in the nation.

US Rep. Mazie Hirono, who joined in the announcement, said she was pleased to see the focus on sustainability—proving that Hawaii can build energy independence and protect natural beauty while improving critical transportation needs.

Under the funding, ten bus shelters will also be improved by Maui County to further comply with standards outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The money comes from a Federal Transit Administration Bus Livability Program grant, administered by the US Department of Transportation.
