Makawao Third Friday town party. Photo by Jack Grace.	September’s Makawao Third Friday Town Party has the theme of “Fall” in Love with Makawao. Celebrate the return of the fall season with a full concert from FreeRadicals Projekt, a seven-piece band of local musicians whose infectious, danceable sound is “a fusion of funk, jazz, hip-hop and soul.” Baldwin Avenue will be closed between Brewer Road and Makawao Avenue, between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. FreeRadicals Projekt hit the main stage at 6:30 p.m. The event is free to the public.
Courtesy image.	Get your reggae on at the Red Star Music Festival at the MACC’s Outdoor Amphitheatre. The show features Rebelution, Collie Buddz, New Kingston and The Grouch. Originally founded in 2004, Rebelution is considered a front-runner of grassroots, independent and tour driven music groups. In addition to their near-constant touring, they are known for creating inspiring and engaging music intended to leave their listeners with the sense that they have the power to make this world a better place. Bermudian Collie Budz has become one of the most buzz-worthy reggae artists out there. In the summer of 2007, his self-titled debut album stormed the charts entering the Billboard Reggae Chart at first position. 6 p.m. at the A&B Amphitheater at the MACC. Tickets are $35 for general admission or $80 for VIP.
Courtesy image.	After the Red Star Music Festival, head to Longhi’s in Lahaina for Funkalicious 2: an unofficial after party. The event is billed as a “FUNKraiser” and a night of future funk music, fashion & soul. DJsBoomshot, Boogiemeister, and Deviant will be spinning alongside Ami Schorr of the FreeRadicals Projekt, who will be accompanying with a live saxophone performance. The evening will also feature live painting, percussion, and a bikini fashion show. $10 at the door, $5 w/Red Star Music Festival MACC ticket. 9:30 p.m. – close.
Saturday, September 22
	The Boys and Girls Club of Maui will be creating Makawao’s largest mural at the Makawao Municipal Parking Lot (behind the Stopwatch Bar and Grill). The organization is holding a day-long work event and is inviting local artists to participate. The event is sponsored by Maui County and will include food, beverages and supplies. Plan to bring your talent and a cheerful attitude. Call 808-573-1169 to reserve a time to paint.

The Hawaiian Islands Land Trust (HILT), a nonprofit organization that protects many areas throughout the islands, is holding its annual picnic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waihe’e Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge on the Kahekili Hwy. The event is open to the public and there will be guided walks, keiki activities, and free food. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP at 808-244-5263. The event doubles as retirement party for executive director Dale B. Bonar. A tireless advocate for land conservation in Hawai‘i, Dale helped to conserve over 17,500 acres conserved forever. Well-wishers can make a contribution to the HILT Capacity Fund, a cause most dear to his heart.

Over 40 local musicians will be taking over Mulligans on the Blue in Wailea for “Zeptember III,” a tribute concert to legendary rock band Led Zeppelin. Male and female vocalists will take to the stage recreating the primal song styling of Robert Plant and making it their own. Jimmy Page, the inventor of the reverse echo or reverb effect is often considered the greatest guitarist of all time and no doubt a tough act to follow. Luckily, ample Maui talent will be on hand to do him justice. Zeptember is a 21-and over event only: bring your ID and plan to show it at the door. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the show is slated to start at sunset, around 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $25. Pre-sale tickets are $20 and can be purchased online.
