Heavy rains resulted in flooding conditions at the Old TK Supermarket in Happy Valley, now occupied by The Living Way Church.

Crews from the Maui Fire Department’s Engine 1 in Wailuku were dispatched to the scene at 399 North Market Street at 10:57 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28.

Fire officials say rainwater from the property and surrounding buildings overwhelmed the drain on property, with flooding compounded by debris obstructing the drain.

An estimated 3 feet of water had flooded the backyard area of the building, and about 6 inches of water was found in the basement of the building, according to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

In addition, the ground floor of the church residence to the rear of the building suffered some flooding as well, authorities said.

Fire crews utilized a floatation pump to de-water the yard, emptying the water onto Market Street, and two sump pumps to de-water the basement.

No damage estimates were provided.
