A flood advisory has been extended for the Island of Maui until 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013.

Radar at 5:22 a.m. showed heavy rain affecting the windward Haleakala area, and much of East Maui.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service say locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to: Kaupo, Kipahulu, Hana, Nahiku, Keanae, and Huelo.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot. Rainfall and runoff can make driving hazardous due to ponding, reduced visibility, and poor braking action.

The NWS advises the public to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The advisory may be extended beyond 8:30 if heavy rain persists.
