Safeway Maui Stores Raise $25,000 to Fight Hunger

Safeway stores on Maui donated more than $25,000 to the Food Bank this week as part of its campaign to fight hunger in the islands.

The money was raised through holiday food drives and check-out fundraising efforts.

Statewide, store officials say the effort helped to raise more than $109,000 for Food Banks across the state.

Thanks to customers, 7,213 bags of groceries were sold at check out stands and donated to those in need this past holiday season through Safeway’s “Check-Out Hunger” campaign.

The specially packed grocery bags provided customers with an easy way to make a donation while ensuring that food bank recipients received the items they needed most. The bags, priced at $10 each, contained Safeway and Kraft products.

According to store officials, every donation received helps to feed one in seven people in Hawaii – that’s more than 14% of the state’s population who turn to a food bank for assistance.
