The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center on Maui hosts a 10th annual dinner this weekend to honor veterans and ensure their legacy continues.

The session is set to convene at 10 a.m., and comes following the passage of the bill in the House Committees on Judiciary and Finance on Tuesday.

After an unprecedented five days of public testimony, the state House committees on Judiciary and Finance advanced a bill with amendments, that if approved by the legislature and signed into law, would legalize same sex marriage in the state.

A waterline break reported at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, will result in a water outage along a portion of Baldwin Avenue in Pāʻia until around 9 p.m., water officials announced.

An unmanned kayak was found floating adrift in waters about one mile south of La Perouse Bay, at around 11 a.m. today. A search is currently being conducted for a possible kayaker in distress in the area where the vessel was located.

An evening fire near the HC&S Sugar Mill in Puʻunēnē burned a pit containing 200 heavy equipment tires, fire officials said.

A male individual was transported in serious condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center last night after sustaining a gunshot wound during an alleged assault in South Maui.

The incidents were reported at 10:40 a.m. at the Big Kmart on Dairy Road, and at 10:55 a.m. at the Walgreens on East Kamehameha Avenue.

Since the incident, officials with the DLNR Aquatic Resources division say a 12-14 foot tiger shark was spotted by lifeguards patrolling the area on Thursday afternoon; and a separate spotting of a “large shark” was reported by DLNR at around 7:50 a.m. today (Friday, Nov. 1), but it subsequently left the area.

In October, the unit was assigned to 79 cases–19 that required ambulance transport; and 33 that were standby calls to incidents in West and South Maui.

There were a total of nine adults and two juveniles arrested at the Halloween event directly related to the evening’s festivities. Officials estimate that there were approximately as many people in attendance this year as there were last year.

The exoplanet, now known as Kepler-78b, is located 400 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus, officials said. With a star that orbits very close to the exoplanet, researchers say Kepler-78b is much too hot to support life.
