Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin over portions of Maui county later today, with hurricane conditions expected in some areas by Friday.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa hosted a press conference on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Hurricane Lane as it continues its approach up the island chain.  

Gov. Ige’s request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration for the State of Hawai‘i has been approved. Word came late Wednesday afternoon that the governor’s request was granted, as Hurricane Lane approaches the Hawaiian Islands.

With Lane continuing its approach toward the Hawaiian Islands, there’s lots of closures and cancellations being announced. 

Emergency shelters will open at select locations across Maui County at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018.

Due to the anticipated effects of Hurricane Lane, the Hawaiʻi State Judiciary announced that its Maui County courts and facilities will be closed Aug. 22-24.

All University of Hawaiʻi campuses and all non-essential university operations on Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānai will be closed until further notice.

The Summit and Kīpahulu Districts of Haleakalā National Park will close at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, in anticipation of heavy winds and rain.

The Department of Education announced the cancellation of after school activities & programs including inter-scholastic athletic events starting Wed., Aug. 22. 

When hurricane or tropical storm force winds are present stay off the water.

Peak winds on Maui are forecast to be in the 25 to 35 mph range with gusts to 50 mph.  Parts of Maui could see 18-24 inches of rain with locally higher amounts.

Lane has intensified yet again and is now an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 160 mph. 

Maui Emergency Management Agency and Mayor Alan Arakawa would like to remind the community to prepare now, before the storm hits, while there is still time.

Heavy rainfall and possible flooding associated with Lane could affect portions of the state beginning later Wednesday

Lane is forecast to pass south of the main Hawaiian Islands Wednesday and Thursday, potentially causing local impacts as it tracks west-northwestward.

Lane has entered the Central Pacific basin as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 130 mph.  Lane had degraded a bit over the past few hours

Hurricane Lane is currently undergoing rapid intensification and is forecast to cross into the Central Pacific basin on Saturday.

At 2,200 miles away from the Hawaiian Island chain, the system is still too far away to determine effects, if any, it will have on the state.
