The Kākoʻo Haleakalā group has mobilized for a third time in opposition to the ongoing construction of the Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope atop Haleakalā. Flares were lit on the road outside of the gate where a convoy carrying equipment and telescope parts was scheduled to depart this evening.
Kanahā Bike Rides Planned on Aug. 22
The ride on Aug. 22 is the Maui Bicycling League’s first monthly ride. The group plans to host a ride each month based on feedback it receives from participants.

The Kamehameha Schools K-12 program applications for the Kapālama, O‘ahu; Kea‘au, Hawai‘i Island; and Pukalani, Maui campuses for the 2016-17 school year are now available online. The deadline to apply is Sept. 30, 2015.
Pavement Preservation Continues in Wailuku Heights

Proposal to Ban New Cesspools up for Review on Maui
The state Department of Health is proposing amendments to current laws, that if passed would prohibit the construction of new cesspools in Hawaiʻi. The proposed changes will be discussed at a meeting on Maui tonight (Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015) at 5 p.m. at the Kula Community Center; and on Molokaʻi on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. at the Kaunakakai Gym.

The group Kākoʻo Haleakalā is mobilizing for the third time in protection of Haleakalā with demonstrations planned on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015 at two locations: the Central Maui Base Yard on Mokulele Highway AND at the junction of Haleakalā Highway (Crater Road) and Kekaulike Avenue.

Maui Committee Considers Smoking Ban at Bus Stops
As currently written, the proposed bill would prohibit smoking 20 feet around bus shelters and bus stop signs. The bill was introduced by Michael Victorino.
Maui County 11th-Grade ACT Scores Increase
Maui County schools were listed in the top four spots with the following increases: Maui High School increases scores by 17%; Moloka‘i, 19%; and Lana‘i, 16%.

The Flood Warning for Maui has since been cancelled and has been replaced with a Flood Advisory, that will remain in effect until 6:45 p.m.
4 Maui Firefighters Promoted
Maui Fire Chief Jeff Murray announced the promotion of four firefighters. The promotions include: Edmund Wong Leong to the rank of Firefighter III; and Kawika Alo, Shawn Kiesel and Laʻakea Chang to the rank of Firefighter II.
Researchers Return from Central Pacific with El Niño Data
An international team of scientists led by researchers from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa arrived in Honolulu recently after studying small-scale ocean mixing under El Niño conditions while aboard the Falkor, Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel.
