Under state law, it is unlawful to take, possess, or sell any moi during the months of June, July, and August. The closure is to allow populations to spawn during the critical summer months.

Officials say the fire was called under control by 1:56 p.m., and the highway was reopened at 2:32 p.m. Mainaga said the area involved was approximately 100 yards long by 20 feet wide. The cause, he said, is undetermined at this time.

Boat in Distress Off Molokai Towed to Safety
Four men were rescued when the boat they were in went adrift off of Molokai on Saturday afternoon. The incident was reported at 2:23 p.m. when those aboard the 23-foot “Nicole W” vessel contacted the Coast Guard for help.
Shotgun, Pellet Gun, Among Items Recovered in Police Shooting
Maui police say the two weapons recovered from the car driven by a slain theft suspect included a sawed-off shotgun and an airsoft pellet gun.
Mokuhinia Restoration at Moku’ula Focus of Meeting
Loko o Mokuhinia was a 17-acre pond that is cited in Hawaiian traditions as the home of Kihawahine, a deity in royal lineage, and guardian for the sacred Mokuhinia ponds and Moku’ula island. In 1918, an executive order established the site as Malu’ulu o Lele Park.

Two Maui High Schools Make Grade in Washington Post
Maui County schools making the list were Maui High and King Kekaulike High School, both on the Valley Isle. A total of six Hawaii public schools were recognized in The Washington Post’s “2012 High School Challenge Index.” Others on the list were: Kalaheo High, Campbell High, Kalani High, and Mililani High on Oahu.
Visitor Medevaced After Falling From Horse in Kīpahulu
The 28-year-old man from Miami, Florida, was about three-fourths of a mile above the Kīpahulu Park Ranger Station when the incident occurred at around 1:20 p.m., according to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
BREAKING: Police Shooting Update – Firearms Recovered
Maui Police issued an update this afternoon saying they recovered firearms, as well as other items from a vehicle involved in Tuesday’s fatal shooting incident at the parking lot of the Mana Kai Resort.
Central Maui Pedestrian & Bicycle Master Plan to be Unveiled
The plan includes a separated pedestrian and bicycle shared-use path linking Waikapu and Wailuku, as well as a network of separated bikeways and sidewalks in Kahului, and a landscaped pedestrian and bicycle esplanade along Kahului Beach Road, fronting the harbor.

2012 Hurricane Outlook Calls for Below-Normal Season
NOAA’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center expects 2-4 tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific this season. That’s below the average of 4-5 seen in a typical season. Cyclones include tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes.

The recovery of a weapon remains under investigation. Acting Capt. Peter Delima, said police are still executing a warrant to get into the vehicle used in the incident.
