US Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaiʻi and more than 30 colleagues introduced a bicameral resolution Tuesday to designate March 10, 2026, as Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, citing the need to protect healthcare workers facing rising threats.

Senator Gilbert Keith-Agaran of Maui authored the bill. It allows for licensed physician assistants to perform certain abortions, repealing the requirement that abortions be performed at certain locations, and clarifying that the state shall not deny or interfere with a pregnant person’s right to choose to (1) obtain an abortion or (2) if necessary to protect the life or health of the patient, terminate the pregnancy.

US Sen. Mazie K. Hirono of Hawai’i and four other Senate Democrats introduced the Let Doctors Provide Reproductive Health Care Act, which would protect doctors against attacks and ensure they can safely provide abortion care in states like Hawai’i where it is still legal.

Hawai‘i Attorney General Holly T. Shikada and a national coalition of 22 attorneys general today issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to supporting and expanding access to abortion care.

The Maui event was one of at least four held across the state today as allied groups joined in a day of action to support abortion access and reproductive freedom for women.

Sen. Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, delivered remarks on the Senate floor emphasizing the need to protect abortion rights in response to the draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade.

The Hawaiʻi State Senate on Tuesday passed Senate Bill 2282, legislation that would strengthen statutory protections for abortion. The bill now goes to the state’s House of Representatives for consideration.
