The beloved Maui Film Festival ran from 2000 to 2024, but Barry and Stella Rivers, the married couple who ran the event, said it was a “great ride” but now they want to retire.

Director-musician-actor Robert Schwartzman will be honored with the Lights! Camera! Passion! Award during the Maui Film Festival, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary Aug. 29-Sept. 2 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului.

The festival honors: Annie Gonzalez, starring as ‘Judy Montañez’ in Flamin’ Hot, with the Rising Star Award; and Yara Shahidi, starring as ‘Tinker Bell’ in Disney’s live action film Peter Pan & Wendy, will receive the Shining Star Award.

The 21st Maui Film Festival went from under the stars to virtual this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic with 74 films from 25 countries.

The director of the Maui Film Festival issued a statement on Thursday evening addressing the Coronavirus challenge facing Maui, Hawaiʻi, the US mainland and beyond.  The festival is currently scheduled for June 17-21, 2020 in Wailea, Maui.

Louie Schwartzberg will receive the Visionary Award at the 2019 Maui Film Festival. The previously honoree was HH Dalai Lama, the only one issued to date.

A special “Toes in the Sand” Cinema, takes place at 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Wailea Beach, fronting the Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea. The community screening is FREE and open to all.
