Maui Council files bill on police response to Hawai‘i Army National Guard alarms

The Maui County Council filed a bill Friday that would have authorized the mayor to enter into an interdepartmental agreement allowing the Maui Police Department to respond to alarms at Hawai‘i Army National Guard facilities.

Maui Council approves MPD participation in Joint Terrorism Task Force with the FBI

Maui County Council members have given initial approval to Bill 92, which authorizes the mayor to enter into an agreement with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for Maui County to participate in a Joint Terrorism Task Force, Honolulu Division. Passed Friday, the measure advances to the full Council for second-and-final reading.

Maui County’s sunscreen ordinance takes effect on Oct. 1

Maui County’s ban on the sale, use or distribution of nonmineral sunscreens without a prescription issued by a licensed healthcare provider, takes effect on Oct. 1, 2022.

Four Seasons Resort Maui vows to “break up with chemical sunscreen”

The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea will launch a collaboration with Maui-based Project Reef, in a concerted effort to encourage “breaking up” with chemical sunscreen. The initiative launches on June 8, 2022, in conjunction with World Oceans Day, and comes ahead of Maui Countyʻs ban on the sale, distribution, and use of non-mineral sunscreens in Maui County, which goes into effect in October 2022.

Maui County Enacts Historic Bill Prohibiting Non-Mineral Sunscreens

Bill 135 was introduced by Maui County Councilmember Kelly Takaya King, and was signed into law as Ordinance 5306 by Maui Mayor Michael Victorino on Dec. 6. It will take effect on Oct. 1, 2022.

The first non-chemical sunscreen dispenser in a Hawai‘i State Park was unveiled Friday morning. It’s a nod to the growing movement and legislation to get ocean users and beach goers to only apply mineral-based sun protection – to protect sensitive coral reef systems around the state.
