New video of yesterday’s deadly officer-involved shooting in Wailuku was released at a press conference today at the Wailuku Police Station. The 23 second encounter at the Kaohu Street, South Market Street intersection, came following a chase that ensued for approximately 12 minutes.

The Maui Police Department’s Plans, Training, Research & Development Section began one month feasibility study on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, on the use of the AXON body-worn camera.

Maui Police plan to field test two other body-worn cameras supplied by different vendors in the up-coming months to best select one for future implementation.

Measures that advance include bills dealing with heat abatement for schools, homelessness and affordable housing, body-worn cameras for police, medical marijuana dispensary inspections and an interisland ferry study.

The Maui Police Department reports that a recent body camera pilot project has since concluded and was met with positive feedback from the ten volunteer officers involved.
