Kaialiʻi Kahele elected OHA Board of Trustees chair
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs Board of Trustees elected Trustee Kaialiʻi Kahele as board chair on Wednesday. Kahele succeeds Trustee Carmen “Hulu” Lindsey of Maui who has served as chair for the past four years. The board and administration recognized and thanked Lindsey for her service as board chair.
Two Native Hawaiians named to federal advisory committee addressing derogatory names of places
US Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland named Native Hawaiians Niniaukapealiʻi Kawaihae and Kamanaʻolana Mills to serve on the new federal advisory group formed to help identify and recommend changes to derogatory terms of places throughout the country.
Mililani Trask of Hilo to serve as the new OHA Trustee for Hawaiʻi Island
Former Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee Mililani Trask of Hilo was selected by the OHA Board of Trustees to serve as the new OHA Trustee for Hawaiʻi Island. She fills the vacancy created by the resignation of former trustee Keola Lindsey on Feb. 1, 2022.
58 ancestral Hawaiian skeletal remains stolen 100 years ago are coming home
This week, a delegation representing the Office of Hawaiian Affairs will repatriate 58 ancestral remains from four institutions in Germany and one in Austria.
OHA Board Chair Carmen “Hulu” Lindsey Releases Statement On Red Hill Shut Down
“This is a long-standing issue. The tanks were built in the 1940s and were not made to last forever. Over the years, more than 180,000 gallons of fuel have leaked from the tanks and tests show they are corroding underground. A mere 100 feet below the leaking fuel tanks is the Southern Oʻahu Basal Aquifer – the primary source of drinking water for Oʻahu. This aquifer alone provides drinking water for over 400,000 Hawaiʻi residents and visitors from Hālawa to Hawaiʻi Kai.”
Office of Hawaiian Affairs Awards $395,000 in Additional Grants
Due to a budget reallocation approved by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs’ Board of Trustees, an additional $394,588 in grants was awarded to projects designed to strengthen Native Hawaiians’ connections to family, culture and land. This includes $23,507 more in funding for Hana Arts.
OHA Awards $1.77 Million in Response Grants to Help in Pandemic Recovery
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs awarded a total of $1.77 million in grant awards to 15 nonprofit organizations – on five islands – through its COVID-19 Impact and Response Grants. Awardees included programs helping to mitigate learning struggles endured by young learners during the pandemic, provide psychiatric services to Native Hawaiians and food to vulnerable Native Hawaiian communities.

OHA Awards $1.25M in ‘Ohana & Community Program Grants to 14 Nonprofits
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs granted awards totaling $1.25 million that will support the Native Hawaiian community through its new ‘Ohana and Community Program Grants. A total of 14 nonprofit organizations on Hawaiʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi will receive funding intended to help reinforce and strengthen Native Hawaiians’ ‘ohana (family), moʻomeheu (culture) and ʻāina (land and water).
