Maui police to launch ‘Put the Phone Away or Pay’ campaign against distracted driving

Beginning Monday, April 1, 2024, and continuing throughout the month, motorists will see heightened traffic enforcement as the MPD Traffic Division will take part in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Put the Phone Away or Pay,” distracted driving awareness enforcement event.  

Hawaiʻi Launches Distracted Driving Awareness Month

The fine for violating the law starts at $257 on Maui, with higher fines of $347 in school or construction zones. During the 2014 fiscal year, the county police departments issued more than 11,000 distracted driving citations statewide.
