#comprehensive affordable housing plan

The housing advocacy group Stand Up Maui is asking Maui County legislators and other policymakers to consider a dozen policies to help meet the housing needs of low-income residents.

A bill relating to residential workforce housing deed restrictions and resale, will be reconsidered at the Maui County Council meeting on Jan. 27.

The Maui County Council is considering a bill to establish new methods for determining the sales price of an affordable dwelling unit and create a program that allows for developer and homebuyer subsidies to bring the cost of the affordable homes down.

With soaring housing prices in Maui County, council members are looking at ways to update the county’s sales price guidelines so affordable housing can actually be affordable.

The Comprehensive Affordable Housing Plan, created and presented by Hawaiian Community Assets, involves a five-year overhaul to the county’s affordable housing approach that would bring in 5,000 homes, offered to two-year Maui residents who are under 120 percent area median income.

A Comprehensive Affordable Housing Plan was delivered to the Maui County Council that provides a roadmap for building 5,000 affordable homes for local renters and homebuyers in the next five years.

Maui nonprofits, Hawaiian Community Assets joins Akakū: Maui Community Media in hosting a series of community meetings from December 2020 through February 2021 to gather feedback from local residents on the development the County’s 5,000-unit Comprehensive Affordable Housing Plan.
