The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) today reported two separate travel-related dengue virus cases, one on Kauaʻi and one on Maui. This is the first dengue case on Kauaʻi for 2024 and the second case of dengue on Maui for 2024. 

The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed another travel-related dengue virus case on Oʻahu. The individual traveled to a region where dengue is known to be spread.  So far in 2024, there have been six confirmed travel-related dengue cases identified in the state (one on Maui, five on Oʻahu).

The state Department of Health’s Maui District Health Office continues its response to the Maui wildfires. Through its Maui District Health Office and local partners, the Department provided updates on behavioral health services, emergency prescription assistance, unsafe water advisories, and the prevention of respiratory and vector-borne diseases.

Maui County is seeing an increase in the number of imported suspect mosquito-borne diseases, such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya.

The meeting comes on the heels of two lab confirmed cases of Zika on Maui.

Laboratory results came in this past week showing that a few Maui residents returning from trips overseas to Zika infected areas are infected.

Hawaiʻi residents are urged to take preventive measures against being bitten by mosquitoes while in Brazil for the 2016 Summer Olympics because of the ongoing Zika outbreak in that country.

The Department of Health has relaunched its Fight the Bite campaign and expanded it to include all mosquito-borne diseases including Zika, dengue & chikungunya.

Last year’s record-breaking hurricane season in Hawaii underscores the need for Maui County citizens to be better informed and better prepared.

Although there have been no “locally-acquired” cases in Hawaiʻi, there were nine confirmed cases of Zika since 2015, which includes a case of an infected infant born with microcephaly, a serious birth defect directly linked to Zika. Companies like Hawaiʻi Biotech are racing to develop a vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends insect repellents that contain picaridin, DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 as the most effective in protecting yourself from Zika.
