President Joe Biden Jr. has approved federal disaster assistance for Maui County following the severe storms, flooding and landslides that occurred from March 8 to 18, 2021. His presidential disaster declaration will provide 75 percent federal funding for approximately $8 million in infrastructure damage sustained by the County of Maui.

For the 24-hour period ending at 8 am today, West Wailua Iki in East Maui recorded 16.63 inches, which would be an extreme rainfall record for 40 states — but not Hawaiʻi.

The heavy rains yesterday afternoon swept a cottage off its foundation on Kaluanui Road in Makawao, stranded vehicles in Upcountry Maui, and resulted in evacuations of eight homes at Maliko Gulch.
