Monk seal pup interactions prompt fisher and boater outreach at Honokōhau on Hawaiʻi Island
Human interactions with a recently entangled monk seal pup on Hawaiʻi Island has prompted outreach to fishers and boaters. The five-month-old female Hawaiian monk seal, named Keaka (tag number T64/T65), has been a frequent visitor to Honokōhau Small Boat Harbor in recent days.

Hawai‘i Humpback Whale Season Underway, Mariners Urged to Maintain Safe Distance
While some whales have already arrived, the majority will be in Hawai‘i between January and March. Iconic humpback whales in Hawai‘i are protected by state and federal agencies. Rescued Honu Returned to Ocean After Entanglement
The honu was rescued in late November when it was found entangled in fishing line. A Sea Turtle Rescue Team returned her to the ocean over the weekend.
NOAA: 76 Large Whale US Entanglements in 2017
The National Marine Fisheries Service confirmed 76 cases of large whale entanglements in fishing gear or marine debris in US waters last year.
