Hawaiian Telcom preparing to launch community WiFi on Maui 

Hawaiian Telcom continues to coordinate with county, state and federal officials to provide phone and community WiFi services to assist the community on Maui. Phone service is now available at the shelter at the War Memorial Gym and Hawaiian Telcom is working to install 1 gigabit speed fiber internet service via WiFi. Hawaiian Telcom technicians are also working to add phone and WiFi service at the shelter at the Kīhei Gym.

To commemorate its 140 year milestone, in its anniversary month of August, the company will offer $140,000 in a special round of Digital Equity grants from the Bell Charitable Foundation.

Police say that per Hawaiian Telcom, customers with landline service are only able to call within Hāna.

Kihei Pole Fire Temporarily Downs 911 Lines

The fire was reported at around 2:43 p.m. to a power pole at the Liloa and Waipuilani intersection in Kihei. Maui Fire Capt. Brandy Lee said the fire burned through and severed the fiber optic line.
