UPDATE: Maui police have reopened the Honoapiʻilani Highway as of 9:27 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2022. The highway was closed in the Lahaina-bound direction at the Kūihelani Highway for about a half an hour while emergency crews responded to the scene of a motor vehicle accident.

The accident has since been cleared. Motorists can expect slight delays as traffic resumes its normal flow.

A 33-year-old Lahaina man suffered fatal injuries when the bicycle he was operating collided with a truck at the Honoapiʻilani Highway intersection at Kapunakea Street, police said. Police have since identified the bicyclist as Gary-Dean Kahunanui.

The accident was initially blocking the makai lane of travel, but shortly before 2 p.m., authorities said the vehicles involved were being moved to the side. In the interim, traffic was being contra-flowed in the area.

In East Maui, road maintenance work is planned on the Hana Highway. The work will result in a single lane closure in the westbound direction from Milepost-10 near the Garden of Eden to Milepost-16 near the Keanae Peninsula Road.
