Keiki voices ignite Hawaiian Language Month at the University of Hawaiʻi
Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month) is observed each Pepeluali (February), and the University of Hawaiʻi is hosting a series of events to uplift Hawaiʻi’s native tongue. This year’s UH-sponsored events are underway. An Ola Ka ʻĪ event is planned on Maui on Feb. 14, 2026.

New HIDOE progress report provides status updates on reopening of Lahaina schools
When schools reopen after fall break, the immediate plan is for King Kamehameha III Elementary students and staff to share a campus with Princess Nāhi‘ena‘ena Elementary while a future temporary site for the school is planned.
HIDOE distance learning hub to open in Lahaina next week
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education will be offering a distance learning hub for K-8 Lahaina students starting Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023 at Citizen Church located at 4275 Hine Way in Lahaina. The learning hub will provide distance learning students with in-person opportunities for teacher support and peer socialization, as well as access to meals, recess, social-emotional learning and other resources. Two additional learning hubs in the works for West Maui students
Approval Granted Allowing Hawaiian Assessments for Immersion Students
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education has secured a one-year waiver, allowing Hawaiian Language Immersion Program students to take a specialized assessment in the 2014-15 school year in lieu of the state’s English language arts and math assessments.
