North extension of Lahaina bypass needed as a critical evacuation route is finally moving forward
The state project to build a 4.5-mile northern extension of the bypass had stalled for decades due to a lack of funding, but that changed with Maui County committing $100 million in Lahaina disaster relief funds earlier this year to help build the road that now has a price tag of $220 to $250 million.
24-hour closure at Honoapiʻilani Highway and Kakaʻalaneo Drive ends
The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation advises motorists that future lane closures will be needed for this project, but are not anticipated to be as extreme.

The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations, including: Hooapiʻilani, Piʻilani and Hāna Highways on Maui, and Maunaloa Highway on Molokaʻi.

Multiple lane closures and lane shifts will take place around the clock May 17-25 at the intersection of Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) and Kakaʻalaneo Drive for permitted work on sewer system improvements for the West Maui Medical Center.
