John and Tweetie Lind of Kīpahulu, Maui honored with The Nature Conservancy’s Kāko‘o ‘Āina Award
John and Tweetie Lind established Kīpahulu ʻOhana and Kapahu Living Farm to revive and restore loʻi kalo farming used for centuries by Hawaiians. They led their community to create a mālama i ke kai (care for the ocean) community action plan and worked for 10 years to establish the Kīpahulu Moku Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area.
Moloka‘i’s James Espaniola Honored by Nature Conservancy
Espaniola is the second Moloka‘i resident to receive TNC’s Kāko‘o ‘Āina Award. Longtime cultural and environmental educator Penny Martin was honored in 2010.
Maui Nui Makai Network Receives Kākoʻo ʻĀina Award
The Maui Nui Makai Network, a grassroots coalition of community partners who are working to protect and restore the islands’ coral reefs and nearshore marine resources, received The Nature Conservancy’s Kākoʻo ʻĀina Award at a community celebration this past weekend on Maui.
