Volunteer Day at Keālia Wildlife Refuge, May 18

The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council will partner with Keālia National Wildlife Refuge staff to remove invasive plant species that threaten to overgrow and crowd out native plants along the Boardwalk. Volunteers will meet at the Keālia NWR Visitor Center at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18 and carpool to the first entrance of the boardwalk for the volunteer day. The workday will conclude at 11 a.m.

Registration open for fourth year of Ahupuaʻa Stewards Program on Maui

Ahupua‘a Stewards helps high school students on Maui develop and implement environmental decisions informed by ahupua‘a systems. The summer session runs from June 11-July 18, 2024, with in-person classes at the UHMC Kahului campus and field trips to HILT lands and conservation partner sites on Maui, including the Keālia National Wildlife Refuge, Haleakalā Ranch, East Maui Watershed Partnership and The Nature Conservancy. Students meet Tuesdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

US Senate Passes Public Lands Legislation to Bring More Federal Dollars to Hawai‘i

Sen. Schatz, who serves as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee said the bill would help to address a $165 million maintenance backlog in Hawai‘i and help to protect public lands for future generations.

Keālia Pond Guided Bird Walks, Visitor Center Hours

Every Tuesday in January, February and March 2018, a Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge naturalist will offer an hour-long guided bird walk at 9 a.m.

Temporary Parking Lot Closure at Kealia Boardwalk

The parking lot will be closed for approximately 5-10 days as crews replace the Trex decking along the entire Kealia Coastal boardwalk.

Keālia Visitor Center Remains Closed, Bird Watching Continues

The Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center remains closed due to ongoing mechanical issues with the facility’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system.
