A new project looks to transform barren land in Kahului into an educational farm.

Kupu and Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation have started the application process for the Hawai‘i Youth Sustainability Challenge, inviting students in grades 9-12 statewide to create innovative solutions to sustainability challenges in their schools and communities.

Museum officials hope the single-use plastic free campaign will set an example of sustainability and conservation in Hawaiʻi. 

The Hawaiʻi Youth Sustainability Challenge, a partnership between Kupu and the Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation that supports student-led environmental initiatives, is accepting applications until Oct. 19. 

A total of 25 schools across the state will receive funding to implement new and innovative environmental projects that raise sustainability awareness
