The Hawai‘i Intermediate Court of Appeals has issued a finding in favor of appellants in a case involving the Board of Land and Natural Resources and its handling of the state’s archaeological permitting process.

Environmental Court Judge Peter Cahill has ordered the Department of Land and Natural Resources not to issue or renew commercial use permits for state waters in Kāʻanapali until it can complete environmental assessments for their use or determine such permits are exempt from environmental review under Hawaiʻi law.

Five nominees for Circuit Judge for the Circuit Court of the Second Circuit (Island of Maui) have been announced for consideration. Governor Josh Green, M.D. will nominate a successor to Richard T. Bissen Jr., who was elected Mayor of Maui County late last year.

Maui County Council candidate Noelani Ahia and 30 Maui County voters have filed a complaint with the Hawai’i Supreme Court seeking to void the results of the Wailuku-Waiheʻe-Waikapū County Council race, and hold a new election.

The Maui County Charter Commission concluded its hearings Thursday, on more than 130 proposed charter amendments. Additionally, in a surprising announcement, Commission Chair Lance Collins announced his resignation effective at the end of Thursday’s meeting.

The first action that the Senate took was to approve the appointment of Leslie Maloian to the District Family Court of the First Circuit. Earlier in the day, Daniel Gluck notified the Senate of his intent to withdraw his name from the confirmation process.
