Nā Hale O Maui blessed a new project Wednesday in Kahului that will bring seven permanently affordable four-bedroom homes to local families through a unique community land trust model.

The Maui Health Foundation has received a $2.25 million grant from Hawaiʻi Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund for the construction of up to 15 additional transitional housing units for healthcare professionals directly impacted by the August 2023 Lahaina fire.

The first two completed homes under the Housing for Healthcare initiative were blessed in a private ceremony held with the two new tenants and their families, both Maui healthcare professionals who lost their homes and belongings in the devastating Lahaina fires last year. The families moved into their homes this month.

Maui Health Foundation’s Housing for Healthcare initiative is accepting interest from healthcare professionals for 31 transitional housing units in Kahului, including 16 brand new, 4-bedroom, single-family homes, and 15 accessory dwelling units (‘ohana units). Homes will be available for lease at below-market rates to healthcare professionals working in Maui County. Preference will be given to eligible healthcare workers displaced by the Maui wildfires.

Maui Health Foundation held a groundbreaking and blessing ceremony on Feb. 12 for construction of 16 homes on the Maui Lani Fairways property to help healthcare providers impacted by the wildfires and to recruit desperately needed healthcare professionals to work on Maui.
