Maui musician Kamalei Kawaʻa secured a spot on Team Chance during the Blind Auditions of NBC’s “The Voice” by singing “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Just seconds into his audition, Chance the Rapper turned his chair in the hopes of securing Kawaʻa for his team.

Fairmont Kea Lani opens Hale Kukuna, Hawaiian Cultural Center

Fairmont Kea Lani announced the grand opening of Hale Kukuna, a living space dedicated to sharing Hawaiian culture with all. Unveiled through a Moku Ka Piko ceremony led by the resort’s manager of Hawaiian culture, Kamahiwa Kawaʻa, and Kumu Luana Kawaʻa, Hale Kukuna opened on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023.

Maui’s Nuff Sedd performs at QKC’s Kamaʻāina Nights, Feb. 17

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center features Maui’s own Nuff Sedd this Friday, Feb. 17 at Kamaʻāina Nights – a locally grown concert series for the entire ‘ohana. The live music starts at 6:30 p.m. with singer/songwriter Sunny Kalama and Nuff Sedd from 7 to 8 p.m.

Queen Kaʻahumanu Center partners with Luana Kawaʻa to teach Hawaiian language

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center has partnered with Luana Kawa‘a of Morning Manaʻo to teach Hawaiian language to keiki and ‘ohana.  Held every third Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., Keiki Club will focus on a new theme each month with curriculum geared to share ‘ōlelo no‘eau (Hawaiian proverbs), Hawaiian vocabulary, and hands-on activities like lei making, ohe kapala, hula, mele (song) and more. 

Maui fashion brand Pulelehua Maui headed to New York Fashion Week

A team of 10 with Maui-based fashion brand Pulelehua Maui is headed to New York Fashion Week on Thursday. This is the first time a Maui brand has been invited, and the first time a Hawaiʻi brand is doing the Brooklyn event.

Farmers, Advocates Rally for Restored Streamflow in Nā Wai ʻEhā

Community organizers staged a sign-waving demonstration outside of the state building earlier this evening to push for full streamflow in Wailuku, Waiʻehu, Waiheʻe, and Waikapū, also known as Nā Wai ʻEhā, or the four waters.
