Maui County’s renewable energy production was up in 2021. But the percentage of renewable energy used for total utility sales decreased slightly to 50.2% in 2021 compared to 50.8% in 2020. This decrease was due to electric sales rising by 9% with the return of tourists following the pandemic shutdown. 

Hawaiian Electric is hosting a virtual community event about how Maui is powered today and what future power resources will meet the island’s energy needs on Thursday, Aug. 12, from 5:30 to 7 pm.

Hawaiian Electric’s celebration of Earth Day highlights the company’s 24 percent reduction in GHG emissions since 2010, 35 percent renewable portfolio standard and continued efforts to decarbonize the energy systems across Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island and Maui County.
