President Joseph Biden approves Hawaiʻi Disaster Declaration

Today, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Hawaiʻi and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by wildfires beginning on Aug. 8, 2023, and continuing. The President’s action makes Federal funding available to affected individuals in Maui County.

“I’ve had an opportunity to survey the storm’s impacts in person and by reviewing drone footage, so I can verify the damage is substantial,” said Mayor Victorino.

Ongoing Maui Drought Leads to USDA Disaster Designation

The US Department of Agriculture designated Maui County as a primary natural disaster area due to losses caused by an ongoing drought.
