The Polynesian Voyaging Society today announced a revised schedule for the Western Pacific portion of the Moananuiākea Voyage in response to confirmed elevated weather risks caused by El Niño and changing climate.  The revision will add one year to the Moananuiākea Voyage.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society is altering the next phase of their Moananuiākea voyage in response to an intensifying El Niño pattern in the Pacific, announcing plans to depart Aotearoa in August 2026.

Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia will sail directly from Rarotonga, Cook Islands to Aotearoa (New Zealand), and postpone visits to American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga.

Polynesian voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia arrived in Bora Bora on Sunday after a two-day sail from Tautira, Tahiti. Bora Bora is the final port of call in French Polynesia before continuing on to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

Following their historic arrival in Papeʻetē on June 28, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia hosted dozens of schoolchildren, families, and community members aboard the canoes. This week, the crew of both canoes resumed their journey through the islands of French Polynesia, beginning with a meaningful and emotional four-day stop in Mataiea, Tahiti.

Weather-permitting, Hōkūleʻa is scheduled to depart Kaunakakai on Sunday and head to Lānaʻi where the voyaging canoe is expected to be welcomed at Hulapōeo that afternoon at approximately 4 p.m.

Students, teachers, and families are invited to Lā ʻOhana (ʻOhana Day) this Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at Hanakaʻōʻō Beach Park (Canoe Beach) in Kāʻanapali, the Maui Huliau Foundation announced. The event will focus on Hawaiian voyaging and natural resource protection.

After more than six months, the Polynesian sailing canoe Hōkūleʻa is on her way back to Hawaiʻi courtesy of Matson.  The Matson ship is expected to arrive in Honolulu on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 6.

The canoe was escorted by a flotilla of outrigger canoe paddlers who spread fresh flowers on the water as Hōkūleʻa sailed into the marina, and two fireboats saluted the crew with a festive water show. 

The people of Lahaina and the rest of Maui were on the forefront of everyone’s minds as Hōkūleʻa symbolizes hope and resilience to many of the Native Hawaiian community who were present at the welcome event.  In honor of Lahaina, crew members wore red Hōkūleʻa shirts and red ceremonial kihei. They also hung special pink feather lei hulu at the top of the mast.  The crew also placed over Hōkūleʻaʻs canvas, a “Lahaina Strong” banner  created by members of Seattleʻs Native Hawaiian community.

The Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa, is expected to depart Prince Rupert in British Columbia today, for a 12-hour sail to Hartley Bay. The Moananuiākea Voyage to circumnavigate the Pacific launched last month.  The 41,000 mile journey will take 42-months to complete, and includes stops in 46 countries and archipelagoes.

After four days in Metlakatla, Hōkūleʻa and crew departed for Hydaburg, Alaska where they arrived on the evening of Friday, July 7.

Polynesian voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa departed Statter Harbor in Juneau, Alaska early Sunday morning, officially starting the four-year Moananuiākea Voyage to circumnavigate the Pacific. 

Now that the canoe and the crew of this next leg from Juneau to Ketchikan have been blessed, they are waiting for a favorable weather window to make their departure and officially start the circumnavigation of the Pacific.

A ceremonial blessing and send-off is planned today in Juneau, Alaska for the global launch of the Moananuiākea Voyage.  The Polynesian sailing canoe Hōkūleʻa and her crew are set to embark on the four-year circumnavigation of the Pacific. 

The end of Leg 2 of the Moananuiākea Voyage came to an end Friday, bringing to a close Hōkūleʻaʻs  Heritage Sail through Southeast Alaska, paying homage to the Alaska family of the canoe that dates back more than three decades.  

Hōkūleʻa, the legendary voyaging canoe that revived the lost art of Polynesian voyaging and navigation and sparked a cultural renaissance in Hawaiʻi, is preparing to embark on a four-year circumnavigation of the Pacific. 

Voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa arrived in Yakutat, the first stop on the Alaska Heritage Sail. It is the northernmost Southeast Alaska community, and the furthest north the canoe has ever voyaged.  The Alaska Heritage Sail is a pre-voyage through the Southeast region of Alaska before the Global Launch of the Moananuiākea Voyage circumnavigation of the Pacific on June 15, 2023. 

Hōkūleʻan arrived in Tacoma, Washington. The crew continues to prepare for the journey to Alaska where the Moananuiākea Voyage Pacific Circumnavigation will begin in June.

After nearly four years at home, Hawaiʻi’s canoe and crew heads off on a journey to circumnavigate the Pacific to engage, connect, learn, inspire and grow the movement to Mālama Honua (care for Island Earth).
