Polynesian Voyaging Society traditional Hawaiian voyaging canoe will return to the island nation for the first time in 20 years; dates will tentatively be from April to September next year.

After 17 days and more than 1,600 nautical miles of open-ocean voyaging, traditional double-hulled voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia made safe landfall Friday morning at Aotearoa’s Bay of Islands. The arrival marks the successful completion of Leg 15 of the Moananuiākea Voyage, a multi-year circumnavigation of the Pacific.

The open-ocean crossing is expected to take about two weeks, depending on weather conditions.

As part of the Moananuiākea Voyage, the Polynesian Voyaging Society reports that voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia will soon depart Rarotonga, Cook Islands, for Aotearoa (New Zealand).

After more than six months, the Polynesian sailing canoe Hōkūleʻa is on her way back to Hawaiʻi courtesy of Matson.  The Matson ship is expected to arrive in Honolulu on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 6.

The Hōkūleʻa will be making several stops in Southern California where the public can learn about its global educational campaign.

Polynesian Voyaging Society CEO Nainoa Thompson today announced a major change to the Moananuiākea Voyage sail plan.  In the wake of the devastating fires on Maui, Hōkūleʻa will return home from San Diego, California in late December, before continuing on the circumnavigation of the Pacific.  

Now that the canoe and the crew of this next leg from Juneau to Ketchikan have been blessed, they are waiting for a favorable weather window to make their departure and officially start the circumnavigation of the Pacific.

Hōkūleʻa, the legendary voyaging canoe that revived the lost art of Polynesian voyaging and navigation and sparked a cultural renaissance in Hawaiʻi, is preparing to embark on a four-year circumnavigation of the Pacific. 

The Polynesian Voyaging Society announced that it will launch a planned circumnavigation of the Pacific upon arrival in Juneau, Alaska on June 10, 2023.  PVS spent five years planning for the Moananuiākea Voyage, which will take four years to complete. 

Polynesian voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia returned home to Oʻahu last week after a successful voyage to and from Hawaiʻi’s ancestral homeland of Tahiti.  

Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia have sailed through the southern end of the doldrums in Day 9 of their Kealaikahiki Voyage to Tahiti.

Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia’s departure to Hilo before setting sail for French Polynesia has been rescheduled to Monday, April 4, 2022, at the earliest. 

The “Kealaikahiki Voyage” will focus on navigational training and cultural protocol to prepare the crew and test the canoes before they embark on the Moananuiākea Voyage next year.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society announced that the Moananuiākea Voyage’s circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean has been rescheduled to the spring of 2023 due to the continuing uncertainties caused by the global pandemic.
