Mokulua Nui shoreline access restored following monk seal weaning
The current closure of the shoreline of Mokulua Nui, the larger of the two Mokulua offshore islets on the windward side of Oʻahu, will end on Oct. 7, 2024. The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife closed public access to the islet on July 13 to facilitate the safe birth and growth of a Hawaiian monk seal.
Monk seal birth at Mokulua Nui islet marks 11th on Oʻahu this year
A Hawaiian monk seal born on Mokulua Nui in in 2018 has delivered her first pup on the same islet. The birth of this pup to Wailea (RJ30), was confirmed on Friday, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The twin Mokulua offshore islets are state wildlife sanctuaries.
Five Honolulu divers cited for fishing and safety violations
Five Honolulu men were cited for a series of alleged natural resources violations on Saturday night. DOCARE reports citizens were concerned about the large amount of ocean resources allegedly being removed from the Lanikai and Kailua areas.
