Three shelters close; two remain open in Maui County

Three shelters on Maui closed at 5 p.m., March 22, 2026, as weather conditions from the kona storm 2 improved and shelter numbers declined, according to Maui Emergency Management Agency. Two shelters – one in South Maui and one on Moloka’i – remain open.

Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi and Upcountry emergency shelters are closing at 7 p.m. today, March 15, 2026, with the National Weather Service forecasting diminishing effects to Maui County from a kona storm that has impacted the state since last week.

An emergency shelter opened at Mitchell Pauole Center in Kaunakakai on Molokaʻi is scheduled to close at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, after most roads were cleared of debris and floodwaters receded along the island’s south shore.
