The Aloha ‘Aina Unity March down Front Street in Lahaina on Sunday was a huge success, according to event organizers, calling it a “a beautiful day of activation.”

The event comes on the heels of a similar march on Oʻahu on Aug. 9 that drew an estimated 10,000 participants, said Maui’s Tiare Lawrence who is among those leading the Maui event.

Nā Kupuna O Maui hosts an educational awareness event of the Kuʻe: The Hui Aloha ʻĀina Anti-Annexation Petition of September 30, 1897.

Patricia “Aunty Patty” Nishiyama of the group Nā Kūpuna O Maui called the use of thrill craft in the area disruptive, saying the activity creates “noise pollution,” and is “an extreme danger” because of multiple conflicting uses of near-shore waters.

Lead supporters of the measure want the state to step up in the protection and safety of ocean users in near-shore waters.

The group Na Kupuna O Maui is issuing a community call to action in memory of West Maui resident, William Kalanikai “Uncle Billy” Gonzales, who was fatally injured late last year after being struck by a private boat at Hanakaoo.
