This year, Kahumoku is among a handful of musical artist to receive the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Artists’ 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. In this interview, Kahumoku describes a Hawaiian culture that nurtured his life as a musician, his artistic routine, and the “accident” that made winning Grammys possible. Maui Now writer Gary Kubota interviews him.

More than 15 slack key artists are planning to perform at the 31st Annual Kī Hō‘alu Festival at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s A&B Amphitheater on June 26. The free event starts at 1 p.m., with gates opening at 12:30 p.m.

Many of the performances at this weekend’s Maui Taro Festival were dedicated to beloved Hāna entertainer, Pekelo Cosma, who passed away in August at the age of 51.

Organized by Hāna residents, the event is designed to promote a deeper understanding of native limu and to make people mindful of their role in making sure our resources are here for generations to come.

The community of Hana, Maui hosts the 19th Annual East Maui Taro Festival on April 29 to 31, 2011 at the Hana Ballpark.
